Alstom has celebrated the opening of the new Maidstone tram depot in Melbourne and the arrival of the first next-generation G Class Tram manufactured by Alstom at its Dandenong site.

In 2023, the Victorian Government awarded a construction alliance led by John Holland Group the contract to build the new Maidstone tram depot.

The Maidstone tram depot is equipped with advanced technology designed to keep Melbourne’s tram network safe, efficient and future-ready. The facility is equipped with Automated vehicle inspection system, which is a tram scanner that captures precise measurements as trams pass through, ensuring safety and performance standards are met in real time. Among other technologies, the depot ensures personnel safety through a critical safety system that protects workers on maintenance roads by preventing tram movements while personnel are working on or near a tram. The digital monitoring tools include real-time data systems to track tram health, maintenance schedules and operational readiness. The tram depot is energy-efficient and has sustainable infrastructure as incorporates LED lighting, rainwater harvesting, adaptive resuse and recycled materials to reduce environmental impact.

The facility has 11 maintenance tracks and space for around 40 trams to be parked between passenger runs. It is designed with enough space to expand for a further 20 trams in future.

The first new G Class test tram was delivered to Maidstone in September 2025. In 2022, Alstom won a EUR 700 million contract for the supply of 100 Flexity 2 light rail vehicles and the delivery of 15-year maintenance for the tram fleet. The new trams started a comprehensive testing programme which will ensure it is ready for passengers. Once the testing is complete, new trams will roll out on routes 59, 57 and 82 over coming years.

The new trams feature a low‑floor design, dedicated mobility spaces, priority seating, hearing loops, improved real‑time passenger information and more energy-efficient design – delivering a more inclusive and sustainable transport experience.

Manufactured in Victoria with a target of at least 65% local content, the programme supports up to 1,900 local jobs across manufacturing, construction and the supply chain. The Maidstone facility itself will support over 40 full‑time Alstom employees.
