MÁV-Start launches locomotive tender

MÁV-Start has published a tender for the procurement of 115 electric locomotives for international and long-distance services, with the first locomotive delivery expected for the first half of 2022. The bids should be submitted until February 17. MÁV-Start expects to conclude the contract by the end of 2020. The acquisition contract will be financed by a loan.

The new locomotives should be able to run at speeds of 200 km/h and they will be deployed on the Hungarian modernised railway lines and international routes such as Germany, Slovakia and Slovenia.

Advanced electric vehicles capable to run with increase speeds on upgraded main lines are expected to significantly increase the competitiveness of railway transport by reducing travel times.

This development will enable the railway company to obtain vehicles that meet today’s challenges and environmental requirements.

According to the tender requirements, two type of locomotives will be purchased. The acquisition envisages the procurement of 90 dual-voltage locomotives and 25 tri-voltage electric locomotives.

The new vehicles will replace the aging 431 series which have a maximum speed of 120 km/h.
