MÁV installs defibrillators in several major railway stations

In Hungary, the railway company MÁV has installed new defibrillators in the stations of Debrecen, Miskolc, and Mátészalka, as well as at several regional offices. The new devices can be used without specialized training, facilitating rapid intervention in the event of cardiac arrest, both by railway employees and passengers.

Since November 28, one defibrillator has been in operation at the busy stations in Debrecen and Miskolc—in the latter case, inside the important Tiszai pályaudvar station—all purchased by MÁV Pályaműködtetési Zrt (the MÁV division responsible for operating the railway infrastructure). Additional devices have also been installed at the railway headquarters in Debrecen and Miskolc, accessible to both employees and people in the public areas in front of the buildings. The exact location of this equipment will soon be included in the National Ambulance Service’s “Életmentő” app.

In Miskolc, a defibrillator is also available in the Búza tér bus station area, helping to expand access to such essential emergency equipment.

Essential devices for rapid response in the event of cardiac arrest

Thousands of people pass through these stations every day – passengers, visitors, or customers of commercial premises. In the event of cardiac arrest, every minute is crucial, and the lack of immediate intervention can cause irreversible neurological damage after just four to five minutes. In many situations, medical personnel cannot reach the scene quickly enough.

That is why the railway company considers it essential to install easily accessible defibrillators that can be used without prior training. The devices are located in cabinets clearly marked with standardised pictograms, accompanied by simple instructions for use and voice commands, so that anyone nearby can intervene immediately.

Increased passenger safety and responsibility to the community

“By installing this equipment, MÁV aims to increase passengers’ sense of safety and provide an additional type of emergency medical service as part of its responsibility to passengers,” the company said.

At the same time, thanks to a donation from an anonymous individual, a defibrillator has also been installed in the public area of the station in Mátészalka, thus extending the coverage of the AED equipment network at the regional level.
