Madrid will allocate nearly EUR 16 million for the major overhaul of 13 9000-series metro trains (manufactured by AnsaldoBreda, now part of Hitachi Rail), which currently operate on certain sections of Lines 7 and 10. The contract will last three years and involves long-cycle maintenance, meaning a comprehensive inspection of the trains’ main components.
This is one of the most extensive forms of technical maintenance, performed approximately once every seven years, to keep the trains in optimal operating condition.
Complete overhaul for essential components
According to Madrid authorities, the work will include inspection and maintenance of key train components, such as: For this overhaul, the trains must be lifted and disassembled piece by piece so that each component can be inspected, repaired, or replaced before reassembly.
- bogies;
- engines;
- braking systems;
- couplings;
- other components essential to the trains’ operation.
After such maintenance, the train returns to service with maximum operational guarantees, which contributes both to extending its service life and to maintaining a safe and reliable service for passengers.
This is not just about standard maintenance
The contract also includes additional work, such as wheel maintenance and adjustment, as well as any extraordinary interventions and technical assistance if specific needs arise.
These operations complement the other, more frequently performed maintenance procedures, known as short-cycle maintenance, which can be:
- corrective, for the rapid repair of defects;
- or preventive, through inspections conducted at intervals ranging from one month to two years.
More trains will require such work
Authorities explain the launch of the contract by the fact that, in the coming years, the number of trains that must undergo this comprehensive overhaul phase will increase. For this reason, some of the work will also need to be carried out outside the metro company’s usual facilities.
The goal is to keep the trains available for service as long as possible, without compromising service quality standards.
