Madrid allocates EUR 16.6 million to modernise key metro depot

The Community of Madrid will invest EUR 16.6 million in a full renovation of the electrical systems at the Canillejas depot—a key metro depot, considered the nerve centre of the capital’s metro network, which serves over two million daily passengers.

The regional government’s Council was informed of the proposed awarding of the contract for these upgrade works, which are expected to take 48 months to complete. The project aims to modernise both high- and low-voltage infrastructures at the site, enhancing the safety and reliability of one of the most strategic facilities in the Madrid Metro system.

The contract includes the construction of four new transformer centres and the refurbishment of two existing ones, all of which are currently supplied via a 15-kilovolt internal network. As part of the upgrade, these systems will be integrated into Metro’s remote monitoring and control platforms—an important step forward in the digitalisation of the network.

The project will also modernise the depot’s low-voltage installations, including replacing existing lighting with energy-efficient LED systems. Additionally, the works will involve the installation of new switchboards, cabling, connection boxes, and power outlets.

The Canillejas depot plays a vital role in Metro operations. It houses the central workshops where long-cycle maintenance is carried out for all trains, as well as the depots for lines 5 and 7, Metro‘s training school, and the company’s logistics hub.
