Lumo to launch direct London–Stirling rail service in 2026

Lumo has announced plans to expand its services with a new open access rail route linking London Euston and Stirling, set to launch as early as spring 2026. The route will introduce five daily services operated by Class 222 six-car trains, offering passengers a more affordable travel option between central Scotland and southern England.

The new service will call at Milton Keynes, Nuneaton, Crewe, Preston, Carlisle, Lockerbie, Motherwell, Whifflet, Greenfaulds, and Larbert before reaching Stirling. Crucially, the route will provide the first-ever direct rail connection to London for Whifflet (serving Coatbridge), Greenfaulds (serving Cumbernauld), and Larbert, enhancing connectivity and opening up economic opportunities in these communities.

“Today’s announcement underscores Lumo’s commitment to growing Scotland’s rail network, providing passengers with more affordable, fast, and convenient travel options. Our new service between Stirling and London has the potential to unlock significant economic opportunities for communities along the route, and we’re proud to deliver this direct rail connectivity to towns previously overlooked by traditional rail services. We are focused on further expanding our services in Scotland to ensure even greater connectivity across the country and the whole UK,” Martijn Gilbert, Managing Director of Lumo, said.

Lumo already operates services between Edinburgh and London King’s Cross, calling at Morpeth, Newcastle, and Stevenage. The service has contributed to shifting passenger demand from air to rail on this key corridor. The new Stirling route marks the next step in Lumo’s ambitions to support modal shift and enhance regional access to London.

The company is also awaiting regulatory approval from the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) to introduce future services to Glasgow, which would further improve rail connectivity for Scottish passengers.
