LTG Group’s infrastructure company, LTG Infra, has renewed its cooperation agreement with the Polish infrastructure manager PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A. (PKP PLK) to ensure mutual assistance in the event of railway accidents on the 1435 mm European standard gauge. The agreement strengthens operational resilience on a strategically important cross-border route and reinforces the partnership between the two neighbouring rail administrations.

Under the renewed arrangement, PKP PLK will provide technical support to Lithuania should an incident occur on the European-gauge line, which plays an increasingly important role for freight flows, military mobility and specialised cargo movements.
Egidijus Lazauskas, CEO of LTG Group, said the agreement reflects more than operational readiness. “This agreement goes beyond technical support—it demonstrates a shared commitment to ensuring the reliability and safety of the existing 1435 mm European gauge. By working closely with our Polish counterparts, we strengthen not only operational readiness but also the trust between our countries. It is a practical measure to guarantee continuity and resilience of this strategically important rail link whenever needed most.”
Piotr Wyborski, CEO of PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A., noted that the renewed cooperation highlights the joint responsibility for the wider Rail Baltica corridor. “Together, we are building safer and more resilient European railway network. Our teams and specialised equipment are fully prepared to support operations in Lithuania whenever required. This partnership is a practical step toward ensuring reliable traffic flow and strengthening the overall security of a strategically important rail route in our region,“ he said.
Support for a key European-gauge corridor
LTG Cargo currently uses the 1435 mm line for freight transport, military mobility and oversized cargo. One of its core services is an intermodal train operating three times a week on the Kaunas–Łódź–Duisburg route. The through-running capability on standard gauge eliminates the need for cargo transfer at the Lithuanian-Polish border, reducing both transit time and costs for shippers moving goods to and from Western Europe.
Although no accidents have occurred on this gauge in the past five years, the agreement is regarded as critical for maintaining high safety standards.
“This demonstrates that maintaining existing infrastructure—often underfunded—is essential to ensuring safe and reliable traffic. Investment in maintenance is a cornerstone of resilience, both for everyday operations and in times of crisis,” said Vytis Žalimas, CEO of LTG Infra.
Additional cooperation on diagnostics
Alongside the renewed emergency-response agreement, LTG Infra has also signed a bilateral arrangement with PKP PLK for the use of a diagnostic vehicle that will regularly assess the condition of the 1435 mm infrastructure. Continuous monitoring is expected to enhance maintenance planning and prevent potential disruptions.
Strengthening cross-border connectivity
Both infrastructure managers continue to collaborate on the longer-term development of European-gauge infrastructure in the region. Their cooperation supports the objective of enabling faster, more efficient cross-border rail connections and reinforcing the resilience of a key north–south transport corridor.
