The Lithuanian rail freight company LTG Cargo has received a special NCAGE (NATO Commercial and Governmental Entity) code, which allows it to participate directly as a supplier in NATO procurement procedures.
Until now, the company has transported military cargo and equipment for allies in cooperation with other European operators. With this code, LTG Cargo will be able to submit bids directly and participate directly in procurement of transport services organized within the Alliance.
Military train traffic has increased by 70% in four years
The company’s CEO, Eglė Šimė, stated that LTG Cargo has been a trusted logistics partner for NATO allies for nearly a decade, and over the past four years, the volume of military trains transported has increased by 70%.
According to her, the company already has the necessary expertise and experience to expand its participation in allied rotations and strengthen security in the region.
180 trains carrying military equipment in a single year
Company data shows that last year LTG Cargo organized and transported 180 trains carrying military equipment, both on the 1,520 mm broad gauge and the 1,435 mm European gauge.
By comparison, in 2024 and 2023, 143 and 145 trains carrying military equipment were transported, respectively, while in 2022 the number was 105.
The company transports military equipment and troops from Western and Central Europe not only to Lithuania, but also to Latvia and Estonia, as well as in the opposite direction, to permanent bases.
Transport for the Lithuanian Army as well
LTG Cargo notes that, last July, during tactical exercises, it transported military equipment and personnel of the Lithuanian Army for the first time.
Subsequently, the company also assisted in transporting four other military shipments belonging to different units.
Military mobility, a priority for the LTG Group
The company emphasizes that, in Europe, a large portion of military equipment—especially heavy equipment—is transported by rail, the main advantage being the ability to move large volumes of equipment quickly and reliably.
In this context, military mobility is presented as an essential factor for the resilience of the eastern region of the EU and NATO.
The LTG Group treats the development of infrastructure for military mobility as one of its priorities.
In this regard, the infrastructure company LTG Infra announced in February the launch of a project in Palemonas, which aims to develop dual-use infrastructure—civilian and military—to facilitate the loading of military equipment and to strengthen Lithuania’s capacity to receive and manage NATO transports more efficiently.
Expansion into Poland and Ukraine
LTG Cargo is the freight company of the LTG group and continues its expansion westward. The operator is also present through its subsidiaries LTG Cargo Polska in Poland and LTG Cargo Ukraine in Ukraine.
The company offers freight transport, intermodal transport, logistics, freight forwarding, loading, repairs for locomotives and railcars, as well as railcar leasing, with a team of approximately 1,500 employees in the logistics sector.
