Lokaltog A/S has exercised an option from its October 2024 contract with Stadler to purchase ten additional battery-powered FLIRT Akku trains. The new units, set to enter service in 2029, will support the operator’s goal of delivering emission-free rail services in eastern Denmark.

Lars Wrist-Elkjær, CEO of Lokaltog, welcomed the decision by Region Zealand to fund the purchase. “The battery trains are of great importance to Lokaltog’s contribution to the green transition, and at the same time we can ensure stronger robustness in our operations,” he said.
The FLIRT Akku model can run up to 100 kilometres on battery power alone, recharging under overhead lines or via regenerative braking. In 2021, the type set a Guinness World Record by covering 224 kilometres on a single charge without recharging. Stadler currently holds a 50% market share in Europe’s battery train segment and also develops hydrogen and hybrid solutions.
“With this additional order, we will deliver a total of 24 modern, emission-free FLIRT Akku – a proven solution that provides zero-emission operations without compromising reliability or passenger comfort,” said Radosław Banach, CEO of Stadler’s Siedlce plant, where the vehicles will be built. “We are proud to continue our partnership with Lokaltog and to support their efforts toward green, future mobility.”
The trains will be built to European TSI PRM accessibility standards, with low-floor entrances, wide doors, automatic gap bridges, dedicated wheelchair and bicycle spaces, a semi-automatic boarding ramp, air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, passenger information screens, and an accessible toilet.
The new units will replace IC2 trains that have been in service since 1997, furthering Lokaltog’s commitment to safe, accessible and environmentally responsible travel.
