Locotrans receives a new batch of box cars

LocotransUnited Wagon Company has delivered Locotrans 50 box cars under the contract signed at the beginning of 2021.

The 11-6874 box car is a convenient option for transporting a wide range of variously–sized cargoes.

The railcar has a load capacity of 73 tonnes and body volume of 175 m3. The design of the new generation rolling stock features improved ergonomics and reliability in operation. In particular, door openings are increased in size compared to conventional models, making loading and unloading easier. The grooved floor provides better grip, both for the load and the forklift wheels. Four loading hatches on the roof and in the side walls of the car body make it easier and quicker to load bulk materials.

The box car is equipped with bogies with an axle load of 25 tonnes. Their increased maintenance interval of up to 1 million km or 8 years, delivers a significant economic benefit to the operator. For comparison, conventional rolling stock is sent for its first scheduled maintenance upon completing 210 thousand km or 3 years after manufacture, and later, every 110-160 thousand km or 3 years. This Tikhvin box car has a service life of 32 years.

“The cooperation between our companies has been growing for a number of years. We purchase rolling stock of different types. Specifically, in the box car segment, railcar manufacturers today are operating in a highly competitive environment. In our view, the box car built by UWC is a versatile solution in terms of ergonomics, technical and economic parameters,” Alexey Petrov, Chief Executive Officer at Locotrans said.

Besides this contract, Locotrans and UWC signed in June 2020 an agreement for the supply of another box car fleet manufactured by TikhvinSpetsMash. The delivery deadline was scheduled for August 2020.

Together with the box cars and timber flat cars delivered to the operator earlier, Locotrans’ fleet now includes a total of 750 cars built in Tikhvin, Leningrad Oblast.
