Lisbon signs tram contract

Urbos tramCarris, Lisbon public transport company, and CAF signed the contract for the acquisition of an Urbos tram fleet of 15 units on April 21, 2021.

EUR 43 million is the value of the contract which includes maintenance services for a period of 5 years.

Under the contract, the first Urbos tram will be delivered in 22 months after contract signing while the remaining 14 light rail vehicles will be delivered in next nine months.

The five-section low-floor tram will have a length of 28.5 metres and will be able to run at a speed of 70 km/h. The uni-directional LRV will be equipped with onboard energy systems to support catenary–free operation.

Currently, Carris’ articulated trams are manufactured in 1994-1995 and entered passenger operation in 1996.

The new trams will enter passenger operation on the Line 15 (Elétrico 15E), doubling the current tram fleet operating this line.

The Line 15 is the most popular tram route in Lisbon linking Praça da Figueira and Algés (Jardim) via Cais do Sodre. The line is also important for tourists as it provides transport connection between Baixa district, the historic center of the city, with the Belem, a southwestern district of Lisbon, known for its seafood restaurants and houses decorated with colorful tiles.

The line is used by the visitors as in Belem there are important historic places such as Jerónimos Monastery, Torre de Belém (Belem Tower), Museu Nacional dos Coches (National Coach Museum) and the Monument to the Discoveries (Padrão dos Descobrimentos).

Currently, Lisbon is developing its public transport system, particularly the metro network for which the European Commission has approved the funding for the construction of the metro connection between the Yellow Line and the Green Line. EUR 210.2 million is the total value of the project of which EUR 67.6 million will be used for the procurement of 14 three-car metro trainsets. The construction contract was signed in May 2020.
