Lineas and FS Logistix have officially inaugurated Modalink, the joint venture that will manage terminal operations at the Antwerp Mainhub Terminal and develop new intermodal services between the port of Antwerp and the rest of Europe. The launch comes on the back of already visible results: between September and November, FS Logistix (part of the FS Italiane Group) doubled the number of containers transported, confirming the importance of this new logistics axis.
The inauguration ceremony took place at Antwerp Mainhub, in the presence of representatives of the Belgian authorities, the Italian Embassy, and the management of Lineas and FS Logistix, together with customers and strategic partners, highlighting Modalink’s role in creating a more efficient and sustainable European logistics network.
A strategic terminal in the heart of Europe
The Antwerp Mainhub terminal is a major logistics hub with 200,000 m² of operational space, eight 700 m lines, three gantry cranes, six gantry conveyors for containers, and a capacity of up to 200,000 containers per year. Its location makes it a key point in the transition to greener and more robust freight transport.
Strengthening the North-South corridor and new connections with Italy
Through Modalink, Lineas and FS Logistix will optimize terminal operations and expand intermodal capacity, with a focus on the Belgium–Italy–Southern Europe corridor. The project includes five weekly round trips between Antwerp and Milan, with additional connections to Pomezia, Marcianise, and Catania.
According to estimates, the new services will be able to:
- remove more than 13,000 trucks per year from European roads;
- avoid more than 46,000 tons of CO₂;
- strengthen domestic distribution through connections with terminals in Italy.
European partnership for sustainable growth
“Today’s inauguration highlights the crucial potential that such strategic partnerships can express, given the current complex geopolitical situation. The consolidation of this vital corridor for European connectivity once again confirms the excellent level of relations between the two countries, demonstrating their cutting-edge technological skills and commercial capacity — a starting point for similar successes in the future,” said Italian Ambassador to Belgium Federica Favi.
“Modalink is more than a partnership: it is a strong and intelligent European connection. Through this joint venture, we are combining infrastructure, expertise, and ambition to create an efficient, scalable terminal solution that is ready for the future of Europe. For Lineas, today represents a fundamental strategic milestone,” said Lineas CEO Erik Van Ockenburg.
