Kontron Transportation secures major contract with SNCF

Kontron Transportation has signed a major service agreement with France’s national railway infrastructure manager, SNCF Réseau. The deal, valued in the three-digit million euro range, strengthens a long-standing partnership and supports the ongoing transition from GSM-R to the next-generation Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS).

Announced on 15 July, the Vienna-based IoT specialist confirmed that the new contract will ensure continuity in mission-critical communications during the shift to modern digital systems. The agreement builds on a collaboration with SNCF that dates back to 2003.

Kontron will support the coexistence and gradual migration between the legacy GSM-R platform and the future FRMCS architecture. This includes maintaining a comprehensive core network and delivering expertise through the company’s AI-enhanced knowledge base.

“The continuity and safety of our railway communications are essential to operating the national network. This LTS contract with Kontron Transportation ensures long-term support until the deployment of the future FRMCS system,” said Sylvie Rerolle, Director of Telekom at SNCF Réseau.

Richard Neussl, Managing Director of Kontron Transportation, welcomed the agreement, noting: “Since 2003, we have been a reliable supplier, system integrator, and partner for SNCF… This agreement not only reinforces our commitment to delivering exceptional value to our clients but also underscores our position as a trusted and reliable partner in the industry.”

Kontron is heavily involved in defining the technical standards that will underpin FRMCS, offering solutions that facilitate a smooth, cost-effective transition without service disruption.

The contract will help ensure operational stability across France’s rail network as the sector prepares for FRMCS deployment—expected to play a central role in modernising European railway communications over the coming decade.
