Kontron to modernize Portugal’s railway communications network

Kontron Transportation has won a contract to modernize Portugal’s central railway communications network on behalf of Infraestruturas de Portugal. The project focuses on radio infrastructure critical to railway operations and represents a step toward the future European FRMCS system.

Kontron Transportation, a company specializing in communications solutions for rail transport, will modernize Portugal’s central railway communications network.

The contract was awarded by Infraestruturas de Portugal, the administrator of Portugal’s rail and road infrastructure. The contract value was not disclosed.

Kontron will become the new provider of radio communications infrastructure for the Portuguese rail network. The company presents the project as an important step toward FRMCS—Future Railway Mobile Communication System, the future European railway mobile communication system.

A Step Toward FRMCS

FRMCS is the technology set to gradually replace the current GSM-R system on European rail networks. The new standard will support communications critical to train operations, as well as advanced digital applications related to signaling, automation, and traffic management.

In the case of Portugal, the project aims to modernize the existing central communications network so that it can support the future requirements of rail transport.

According to Kontron, the contract confirms the company’s ability to provide mission-critical rail communications solutions that are ready for next-generation technologies.

What the Contract Includes

The project includes the supply, installation, configuration, testing, commissioning, and migration to the new Kontron solution.

The company will also provide training, documentation, maintenance, and operational support.

To ensure a smooth transition, the new system will be integrated with the Portuguese railway administrator’s existing infrastructure and applications.

Kontron states that the project strengthens its position in the Portuguese railway market and expands its role in modernizing railway communications networks.

“We are proud to support the modernization of Portugal’s railway communications infrastructure. This project underscores our commitment to providing reliable, future-proof communications systems for critical railway operations,” said Richard Neussl, managing director of Kontron Transportation.

Critical Communications for Railways

Railway communications networks are essential for safety and operational continuity. They ensure connectivity between operations staff, control centers, trains, and technical infrastructure systems.

Modernizing these networks is becoming increasingly important in the context of the digitalization of European rail transport and preparations for FRMCS.

For Kontron Transportation, the contract in Portugal also represents an opportunity to expand its portfolio of solutions in the area of access infrastructure and to support rail operators’ transition to next-generation communications technologies.

Kontron AG, an Austrian IoT technology company, has approximately 7,000 employees in over 20 countries and provides solutions for transportation, industry, communications, energy, and other critical sectors.
