Koleje Dolnośląskie signs train facility expansion contract

Koleje Dolnośląskie, the regional rail operator in the Lower Silesian Voivodship of Poland, has signed a contract with a consortium of Alstal Grupa Budowlana and Alstal Investment for the extension of Legnica train workshop.

The contract, signed on January 13, provides for the completion of all works within 14 months. The first construction works at the facility will start in February and will last until the end of March 2023.

“The new facility will allow us to be very independent in the field of periodic inspections and repairs of the rolling stock, and consequently will also bring savings. The expansion of service facilities is an important element in the implementation of the development strategy of Koleje Dolnośląskie in the coming years. We have invested in rolling stock and the expansion of the back-up facilities is a natural complement to these activities,” Witold Idczak, vice president of Koleje Dolnośląskie said.

The development of Legnica train workshop covers the construction of the ground and underground technical infrastructure, sheds, internal rail infrastructure, tanks and fuel dispensers. Thanks to the expansion of the facility, the carrier will have at its disposal four tracks with a length of 120 metres and one track intended for a year-round automatic car wash.

The modernisation and expansion of the facility is estimated at PLN 65 million (EUR 14.2 million) and part of the expenses will be covered by the co-financing of the Marshal’s Office of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship. The funds come from the EU Regional Development Fund under the Regional Operational Programme of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship for 2014-2020.The initial amount of PLN 30.5 million (EUR 6.7 million), provided by the Marshal Office of Lower Silesia, was increased to PLN 48 million (EUR 10.5 million).

Initially, the total cost of the project was estimated at PLN 45 million, “but due to the rising prices of construction materials, the expenses related to the modernisation of the service hall increased. As a result, the management board of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship decided to increase the amount of co-financing,” Wojciech Zdanowski, vice president of Koleje Dolnośląskie explained.

Recently, the rail operator signed a EUR 32.4 million contract to acquire 5 five-car Elf2 EMUs and has selected the supplier of 2 three-car hybrid multiple units.
