Siemens Mobility has launched the new Vectouro series, a new standardized passenger train platform designed for international service, and Knorr-Bremse has been selected to supply key systems for these vehicles.
Knorr-Bremse states that the contract is worth “several tens of millions of euro” and involves the delivery of key technologies that will help improve the performance, availability, and efficiency of the new trains. Among the equipment supplied by Knorr-Bremse are braking systems, passenger access systems, and other components designed for safe operation on international rail networks.
In addition to braking systems, the company will also supply sealed sliding-pivoting door systems, which are already in use on long-distance trains. These include boarding facilities that enable quick and safe passenger access and help ensure that trains run on schedule.
The new Vectouro range was designed to respond to changes in the European rail transport market. In addition to traditional rail operators, an increasing number of private companies and leasing models are emerging, creating demand for flexible trains capable of being quickly adapted to different operating conditions and national regulations.
Trains for International Service
The Vectouro platform was developed specifically for InterCity and long-distance services crossing European borders, particularly in Central and Northern Europe. The trains will be able to operate on both modernized conventional lines and high-speed corridors, reaching speeds of up to 230 km/h.
The Vectouro platform concept aims to simplify authorization and operational processes across multiple countries, offering operators greater flexibility and better cost predictability. As a result, the same platform can be configured for different markets and operational requirements, reducing the complexity associated with the procurement and operation of international rolling stock.
The new generation of Vectouro trains is designed to work seamlessly with Vectron locomotives, and the trains can operate both as conventional locomotive-hauled trainsets and in the “Vectrain” configuration—a push-pull system that enables more efficient operation of passenger services.
In the push-pull configuration, the trains are equipped with VectrainReady control cars, which provide additional passenger seating and allow for a quick change in direction without having to move the locomotive to the other end of the train.
