Knorr-Bremse to deliver braking systems for FNM’s trains

Hitachi Rail and Knorr-Bremse Rail Systems Italy have signed a contract to supply braking and sanitary systems for 50 double-decker regional trains destined for Ferrovie Nord Milano.
The braking system supplied for the Hitachi double-decker trains ensures maximum safety through the use of multiple redundant control systems. The system is based on company’s EP Compact control modules that combine maximum brake control system reliability and maintainability with more compact dimensions and optimized component integration.
The sanitary system, based on Knorr-Bremse’s compact vacuum unit which uses high-per-formance sluice valves, is synonymous with efficiency and reliability. It features an advanced diagnostics concept, as well as condition-based maintenance algorithms that can increase availability and enable maintenance costs to be reduced. The unit minimizes water and compressed air consumption per flushing cycle, helping to reduce the environmental impact of the sanitary system.
In 2018, Hitachi Rail and Ferrovie Nord Milano signed an 8-year framework agreement for the supply of 50 to 120 double deck high capacity trains. The agreement provides for double-deck, bi-directional, fixed formation, 3kV electric trains with distributed power.
Under the agreement, the minimum guaranteed supply quantity is 50 different configurated trains with a total value of EUR 423.85 million. From 2020, Hitachi Rail Italy will deliver 30 four-car trains valuated at EUR 237.5 million, with EUR 7.9 million per train. They will have 466 seats and the capacity for standing passengers is 449. They are designed to run at a max speed of 160 km/h.
This contract is in addition to up to 300 double-deck trains which Hitachi is manufacturing for Trenitalia, and for which Knorr-Bremse is also supplying braking and sanitary systems.
