Knorr-Bremse signs 5-year agreement for railway signaling in the UK

Knorr-Bremse Rail Systems UK has signed a 5-year framework agreement with AtkinsRéalis to supply ElectroLogIXS signaling technology for railway network modernization projects in the United Kingdom.

ElectroLogIXS is a digital solution for signaling, centralization, and control of track equipment and level crossings, approved by Network Rail and certified to SIL4, the highest safety integrity level for such systems.

Digital Signaling for British Infrastructure

Richard Ward, sales director at Knorr-Bremse Rail Systems UK, stated that the agreement marks an important milestone in the collaboration with AtkinsRéalis.

“This framework agreement marks an important step in our relationship with AtkinsRéalis and reflects the confidence both organizations have in the capabilities of ElectroLogIXS. By combining our signaling technology with AtkinsRéalis’ proven delivery expertise, we are well-positioned to support future rail infrastructure projects and contribute to the continued modernization of the UK rail network,” said Richard Ward.

Lee Ludlum, director of rail systems at AtkinsRéalis, stated that the modernization of the UK signaling system involves the safe integration of new and existing technologies into a network that is currently in operation.

“The modernization of the UK’s railway signaling system depends on the safe and efficient integration of new and existing technologies into a live operational environment. This agreement with Knorr-Bremse builds on our successful partnership and supports our ability to rapidly deploy our advanced signaling solution, minimizing disruption for passengers and operators and delivering predictable results for customers,” said Lee Ludlum.

How ElectroLogIXS Works

During operation, ElectroLogIXS controls train traffic on sections of track, ensuring the correct positioning of switches and the safe operation of level crossings.

The system helps prevent traffic conflicts between trains and reduce delays.

Knorr-Bremse highlights the solution’s modular architecture and digital capabilities as well-suited to the evolving needs of the British rail industry.

Under the framework agreement, Knorr-Bremse will supply the ElectroLogIXS units, while AtkinsRéalis will handle the design, integration, installation, and commissioning of turnkey signaling systems using this platform.

The Havant project is among the current applications

The partnership combines Knorr-Bremse’s expertise in signaling technology with AtkinsRéalis’s project delivery experience and its advanced signaling method, Advanced Signaling Method (ASM).

The agreement strengthens the long-standing collaboration between the two companies to modernize the British rail network.

Knorr-Bremse is currently supplying ElectroLogIXS for the Havant signaling retrofit project, carried out by AtkinsRéalis under the Train Control Systems Framework (TCSF).
