Russian Railways (RZD) and the Central Suburban Passenger Company (CPKK) have launched the first train of the latest Ivolga 4.0 train on the Yaroslavl Line of the Moscow Railway.

This milestone marks another step in the large-scale modernisation programme for suburban transport in the Moscow region. The new Ivolga 4.0 train manufactured by Transmashholding represents a significant leap forward in the development of domestic railway transport.

The latest Ivolga 4.0 train key advantages of the new model include:

  • Increased capacity – with wider aisles and doorways, and more doors;
  • Faster boarding and disembarking thanks to improved car configuration;
  • 20% more passenger seats compared to previous models; and
  • 20% higher route speed, reducing travel time

The launch of Ivolga 4.0 is a logical continuation of the systematic infrastructure upgrades and development of the Yaroslavl suburban rail line including the construction of additional main tracks through joint efforts of Moscow Metro and Russian Railways, reducing, by one third, the train intervals, and the creation of a major transport hub at Rostokino, with a transfer to the Moscow Central Circle (MCC).

Of special importance is the high degree of production localisation. The Ivolga trains are 97% made from domestically produced components, manufactured at 600 enterprises across the country. Moscow accounts for 75% of orders for new metro and suburban train cars, driving growth in the Russian transport industry.

The launch of the atest Ivolga 4.0 train on the Yaroslavl Line opens a new chapter in the history of suburban transit, providing passengers with comfort, speed, and reliability on modern domestic rolling stock. The Yaroslavl suburban line connects Moscow with several towns in the northeastern direction, while the mainline historically extended to Yaroslavl and beyond.

By 2030, 92 new Ivolga trains are planned to be launched on the Yaroslavl Line, fully renewing the suburban train fleet. This programme will make a significant contribution to the development of Russian engineering.

“We are implementing a programme to improve suburban transport. The rolling stock has already been fully renewed on D1, D2, and D3, and we are completing this process on D4. The Ivolga 4.0 train is comfortable, spacious, and fast. By 2030, we will completely renew the fleet on the Yaroslavl line, with plans to launch 92 trains,” the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry, Maksim Liksutov, said.
