Italy’s rail infrastructure is set to receive a EUR 2.1 billion investment boost. The Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MIT) and Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), part of the FS Italiane Group, have signed the third supplementary update to the 2022–2026 Programme Contract – Services section. The revised agreement covers the years 2025 and 2026.
Of the total amount, around EUR 1.6 billion is allocated to extraordinary maintenance works, while approximately EUR 500 million will support the management of Italy’s national rail infrastructure.
The update was approved following a positive outcome of the formal briefing presented to the Interministerial Committee for Economic Planning and Sustainable Development (CIPESS). It reflects adjustments required due to inflation, rising material and supply costs, and the expansion of extraordinary maintenance activities at railway stations.
The updated contract also includes measures to strengthen RFI’s workforce through an ongoing recruitment plan aimed at bolstering maintenance operations across the network.
In a joint statement, MIT and RFI reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing the maintenance and operational management of Italy’s rail infrastructure. The update is described as a key step in ensuring a more reliable and efficient railway service, as well as advancing the goal of sustainable mobility.
RFI reiterated its dedication to modernising the national railway system, ensuring higher service quality and improved transport conditions for citizens and the country.
