The Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport and the FS Italiane Group reviewed the status of major ongoing railway investments during a meeting dedicated to infrastructure projects, the objectives of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP), and measures prepared for the summer season.
The meeting took place between Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Matteo Salvini and FS Italiane Group CEO Stefano Antonio Donnarumma, in the presence of the leadership of FS’s main operating companies.
According to the information presented, the Italian railway network is undergoing one of the most intensive periods of investment in its recent history. By 2026, approximately 1,300 construction sites will be active across the entire national network, while authorities estimate that all objectives and milestones set out in the NRRP will be met.
Investments and Measures to Mitigate the Impact of Construction
FS officials emphasized that the main challenge is to carry out infrastructure modernization and expansion projects without significantly disrupting train service or the passenger experience.
In this context, the 2026 Summer Plan—developed by RFI, Trenitalia, and ANAS—was presented, which includes measures to reduce the inconvenience caused by construction sites. The plan calls for strengthening operational structures, intensifying maintenance activities on the main rail corridors, increasing the capacity to respond to unforeseen situations, and expanding passenger assistance services.
Throughout the summer, additional customer service teams will be available at major train stations, approximately 60 backup buses will be on standby to ensure uninterrupted service, and operational centers will continuously monitor rail traffic to respond quickly to any issues.
Data presented at the meeting also show an improvement in operational performance. In the first 15 days of June 2026, the punctuality of rail services increased by more than 7% compared to the same period in 2025, a trend attributed to measures adopted to optimize traffic flow and increase the network’s resilience.
The Ministry of Transport and the FS Group have reaffirmed that the objective remains to continue the program to modernize Italy’s railway infrastructure, while maintaining a high level of service for passengers throughout the duration of the works.
