India’s thermal power company orders BHEL electric locomotives

India’s National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) awarded Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) a contract to supply six 6,000 HP electric locomotives for material handling operations at Lara thermal power project site.

The locomotives will be manufactured at BHEL’s Jhansi facility in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The vehicles will be equipped with state-of-the-art IGBT-based propulsion equipment, developed and supplied by the company’s Bengaluru unit. The traction motors for the locomotives will be supplied from BHEL’s Bhopal plant.

The state-owned manufacturer says that this is country’s first locomotive contract for industrial application which also determine its rolling stock offering driven by increased range of products and services in new market segments especially for power, steel and cement industry companies, in addition to Indian Railways.

BHEL has supplied more than 450 electric locomotives of various types to Indian Railways.

In its efforts to explore new ways of limiting carbon emissions, the company will focus on eco-friendly electric locomotives for industry to provide cleaner and alternative option to diesel electric locomotives.
