India: Kerala cabinet approves two light rail projects

delhiThe Kerala cabinet has approved the Detailed Project Report (DPR) of light rail transport schemes proposed for the Trivandrum (capital of the southern Indian state of Kerala) and Kozhikode, estimated to cost Rs 6,728 crore (USD 1.7 billion). As per the present plan, the Trivandrum project will cover around 22.20 km from Technocity near Pallipuram to Karamana with 19 stations.
The two projects will be implemented by utilising the service of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, which is implementing the Kochi metro project.
The projects will be implemented jointly by the state and the Centre by sharing 20 per cent of the cost, like that of the Kochi Metro. The balance 60 per cent cost will be mobilised as loan. The state government will meet the expenses for land acquisition.
