India inaugurates new railway line Lumding-Silchar

india_rail lineIndian Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu has inaugurated the landmark Lumding-Silchar (Assam) railway line. The 210 km broad gauge line will improve connections in the north-eastern region between Bark Valley in Assam and the states of Tripura, Manipur and Mizoram. The railway line will be crucial for the supply of grains, fertilizers and petroleum products in the region
Lumding-Silchar section is phase 1 of the broad gauge line project in this area. The second phase consists of gauge conversion of three sections: Badarpur-Kumarghat, Baraigram-Dullabcherra and Silchar-Jiribam, which will be completed by March 2016.
