Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India has inaugurated the 306 km long Rewari – Madar rail section on the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor on January 7 through video conference.
The line is operated by double-stack long-haul container trains on a broad-gauge electrified infrastructure. The first two trains have been flagged off to run from New Ateli in Haryana, a North Indian state surrounding New Delhi, to New Kishanganj in Rajasthan, a northern India state. Two trains were flagged off operated by WAG 12 electric locomotives manufactured by Indian Railways at the Madhepura, Bihar factory. The 12,000 HP locomotives, are able of hauling 6000 tonnes at a top speed of 120 km/h.
The world’s first 1.5-km-long double stacked container train is “a great achievement” for India which is joining “the select nations in the world with this potentiality. There has been a great effort of our engineers, technicians and labourers behind this,” Narendra Modi said.
In Haryana State, the section has a length of 79 km, crossing Mahendragarh and Rewari districts, while the large part of it, of 227 km, was constructed on the territory of Rajasthan, crossing Jaipur, Ajmer, Sikar, Nagaur and Alwar regions.
Under the project, 15 major bridges, one viaduct and 269 minor bridges were constructed. Through 4 rail fly overs, 22 road over bridges and 177 road under bridges construction, 148 level crossings were removed.
On the Rewari – Madar rail section, there are 9 newly built DFC stations, of which three are three junction stations.
The Western Dedicated Freight Corridor will have a total length of 1506 km connecting Dadri in Uttar Pradesh to Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT) in Mumbai and crossing through the states of UP, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra of WDFC. “It will make farming and allied business in Haryana and Rajasthan easier and also infuse new energy to industries in several such districts like Mahendragarh, Jaipur, Ajmer and Sikar. The manufacturing units and entrepreneurs of these states will have faster access to national and international markets at a much lower cost. Faster and affordable connectivity to the ports of Gujarat and Maharashtra will boost new investment opportunities in the region,” the Prime Minister said in his speech.
Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation is responsible for the construction of the dedicated freight corridors, being seen as a game changer for India in the 21st century.
Recently, the PM has launched the New Bhaupur-New Khurja section on the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor, allowing trains to run at speeds of up to 90 km/h, from 25 km/h, running about 3 times faster than before.
