Important decision obtained for the Warsaw–Łódź high-speed line

The Warsaw–Łódź high-speed line has obtained from the Mazovia Voivodship the first of 12 location decisions required for its construction, covering the section near the Warszawa Zachodnia (Warsaw West) station, announced the state-owned company Centralny Port Komunikacyjny (CPK).

The entire section covered by the location decision is approximately 1 km long, with part of it planned to run through a tunnel near the Warsaw West station. This section is of major importance as it will be the link from Warsaw to the CPK Airport and Łódź, where work on the long-distance tunnel is already underway.

The section included in the location decision will connect directly to the railway configuration developed by PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe, which has integrated the CPK investment into its design.

“We have obtained the first of the 12 location decisions required. This important section near Warsaw West station paves the way for future investments. We appreciate the constructive cooperation with the Voivode of Mazovia and look forward to the next location decisions, which are essential for further progress,” said Piotr Rachwalski, member of the CPK Management Board for railway investments.

The Warsaw–Łódź high-speed line is part of the so-called “Y” line of the high-speed rail network, for which CPK is responsible.

Design work on the 140 km section of the high-speed line between Warsaw and Łódź is nearing completion. CPK has already submitted 8 of the 12 planned applications for location decisions. The company also holds all environmental decisions and 9 of the 14 water management decisions.

The Warsaw–Łódź section was the first to be included in the Voluntary Railway Acquisition Program, through which CPK has already acquired over 151 plots (159 ha), and over 95% of eligible owners have participated in the program.

As part of the Warsaw–Łódź high-speed line project, CPK plans a total of eight tender procedures, six for the main construction works and two for traffic control systems, telecommunications, and the contact line.

The construction of the high-speed line between Warsaw and Łódź will reduce the travel time between the two cities to approximately 40 minutes, compared to about 70 minutes currently. Passengers will be able to reach the CPK Airport in Warsaw in less than 20 minutes. Once the entire “Y” line is completed, the journey between Poznań and Warsaw will take just under 1 hour and 40 minutes, instead of around 2.5 hours at present, and the journey between Warsaw and Wrocław will be reduced to less than half the current duration.

The Warsaw–Łódź section, whose design work is receiving European funding through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF 2), is scheduled to open at the end of 2032, simultaneously with CPK Airport. According to the schedule, the high-speed sections from Łódź to Wrocław and Poznań, via Sieradz, should be operational by the end of 2035.

The Council of Ministers has allocated over PLN 76 billion (EUR 18 billion) for CPK railway investments until 2032 – approximately two-thirds of the current CPK Multiannual Program.
