Île-de-France Mobilités orders new trains

Île-de-France Mobilités has approved the purchase of an additional 96 RER Nouvelle Génération (NG) trains, representing an investment of EUR 2.1 billion in current terms, as part of its continued modernisation of the RER D network.

Since 2016, Île-de-France Mobilités has committed to renewing its rolling stock across the region, with over 1,200 new or renovated trains deployed to date. The latest order, approved by the Board of Directors on 10 April 2025, brings the total number of RER NG trains for the RER D line to 132, all scheduled to be in service by 2029.

Île-de-France Mobilités has also requested that Transilien SNCF Voyageurs and train manufacturer Alstom accelerate delivery and commissioning schedules to ensure deadlines are met. Regular progress updates are expected.

The RER NG trains first entered service on Line E in November 2023, followed by deployment on the RER D in December 2024. They are gradually replacing the older Z2N trains on the line, with the exception of the Malesherbes branch, which is operated using Regio 2N trains.

Following three previous orders—totalling 130 RER NGs for Line E and 36 for Line D—this new acquisition brings the overall number of RER NG units allocated to the RER D to 132.

Currently, around ten RER NG trains are in service on the Corbeil-Essonnes branch of the RER D. Subject to adherence to the delivery timeline, approximately 30 trains are expected to be in operation on the line by the end of 2025.

Maintenance of the new trains will be carried out at two key sites: the Villeneuve-Saint-Georges Technical Centre, where the foundation stone was laid in June 2024, and the Joncherolles Technical Centre, which is currently undergoing modernisation.

The initiative aims to provide passengers with higher-capacity, more efficient, and more comfortable transport services throughout the Île-de-France region. The upgrade is also expected to enhance operational performance, with punctuality on the RER D improving by 1% between 2023 and 2024, reaching 87.5% last year.
