Hyundai Rotem has signed a major agreement with Morocco’s national railway operator, ONCF, to provide maintenance services for the new electric trains destined for the country’s railway network.
The agreement was formalized in Rabat during a ceremony attended by Hyundai Rotem CEO Lee Yong-bae and ONCF Director General Mohamed Rabie Khlie.
The maintenance contract is valued at EUR 487 million (748.2 billion won) and represents the largest international agreement of its kind signed to date by the South Korean company.
Long-Term Partnership for the Moroccan Rail Network
The agreement covers a 20-year period and involves the maintenance of the entire fleet of 440 double-decker electric railcars to be delivered under a previous contract signed in February. The trains will connect Morocco’s major cities, including Casablanca, and will support the expansion of the network ahead of the 2030 FIFA World Cup, a tournament that Morocco is co-hosting.
Under the contract, Hyundai Rotem will supply spare parts, operate a technical support center, and provide heavy maintenance services, including technical inspections, repairs, and the replacement of components critical to operational safety.
The contract is closely linked to a previous agreement, worth EUR 1.3 billion, under which Hyundai Rotem is supplying 440 electric trains for the ONCF network.
Hyundai Rotem will collaborate with over 200 small and medium-sized enterprises in South Korea to supply the parts needed for maintenance, thereby contributing to the development of the railway industry in both Korea and Morocco.
The agreements are part of Morocco’s strategy to modernize its transportation infrastructure, within the framework of the “Vision 2040” program, which aims to significantly expand the railway network, increase connectivity between cities, airports, and ports, and strengthen the country’s role as a regional transportation hub.
