HSL Logistik has drawn a clear and positive conclusion from its daily operational experience with the Euro9000 locomotive, leased from European Loc Pool (ELP). The multisystem locomotive has been part of the company’s fleet since 2023 and is now proving its strategic value in heavy international freight transport.

Fleet Manager Europe, Michael Steinhäuser, has overseen the locomotive’s introduction from the outset and is responsible for its deployment across multiple European corridors.
His day-to-day assessments underline how the Euro9000 provides stability, flexibility and measurable operational gains.
High performance on long, heavy trains and complex routes
The Euro9000 shows its strengths precisely where traditional traction concepts reach their limits — on long and heavy trains, across system boundaries, and in dense traffic environments.
HSL Logistik deploys the locomotive on international routes between Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and Switzerland.
In these scenarios, the locomotive consistently delivers high traction performance, even on steep gradients. Its 9,000 kW of power and 500 kN of starting tractive effort ensure stable pulling performance and smooth slip control.
This leads to fewer interventions by dispatchers and more reliable timetable adherence.
Fewer locomotive changes and more stable processes
A major operational advantage is the significant reduction in locomotive changes. With multisystem capability and integrated last-mile functionality, the Euro9000 simplifies international freight movements:
- seamless border crossings without changing locomotives
- operation on non-electrified industrial sidings without additional diesel units
- shunting in terminals and yards without overhead lines
These features contribute to more stable processes and a noticeably higher punctuality rate.

Energy efficiency and driver-centred operation
Operators report reduced energy consumption due to efficient recuperation and consistent speed profiles. Idle times have also decreased.
At the same time, processes that previously required time and resources — such as reserve deployments or additional shunting — are now avoided.
Drivers describe the Euro9000 as “power under control”. The ergonomically designed cab, improved visibility and assistance systems support staff during complex operating scenarios.
Crucially, the locomotive’s predictable behaviour under heavy load is regarded as a key advantage in demanding freight operations.
Predictable maintenance and strong cooperation with ELP
The Euro9000 also demonstrates a high level of predictability in maintenance performance. Longer, condition-based intervals result in fewer unplanned workshop visits — a significant benefit for a company operating 24/7 across Europe.
HSL Logistik highlights its cooperation with ELP as direct, efficient and solution-oriented, with locomotive introduction, training and ECM processes fully supported from the outset.
Strategic advantage in cross-border freight
HSL Logistik’s operational experience shows that the Euro9000 delivers benefits far beyond pure technical specifications. It simplifies workflows, improves punctuality and broadens deployment possibilities in international heavy freight.
For operators dependent on high-capacity, cross-border traffic, the Euro9000 represents a strategic advantage and illustrates how modern multisystem technology from ELP can strengthen European freight transport sustainably.
