The British HS2 high-speed rail project has reached another important milestone with the completion of its first “green tunnel,” built using the “cut-and-cover” method. This is the 880-meter-long Copthall Tunnel, located near West Ruislip on the western outskirts of London.
The tunnel was constructed using 1.2 million cubic meters of excavated material from the nearby Northolt twin-tube tunnel project. Initially, this section of the route was to be built using an open-cut method, but engineers opted for the “cut-and-cover” approach, which allowed for the reuse of all excavated material directly on-site. This eliminated approximately 100,000 truck trips that would have been required to transport the soil to other locations, significantly reducing the impact on local communities and the environment.
The Copthall Tunnel is the only single-tube tunnel on the HS2 route and was designed to withstand the forces generated by trains traveling at speeds of up to 200 mph (approximately 320 km/h). The work was carried out by the SCS consortium, consisting of Skanska, Costain, and Strabag, which is responsible for the civil engineering works on the southern section of the line.
“The completion of the Copthall Tunnel marks another important milestone for HS2. Thanks to an innovative engineering solution, the tunnel blends into the landscape and reduces the impact on nearby communities, while also avoiding thousands of truck trips by using the excavated material on-site,” said Lord Peter Hendy, Minister for Rail Transport.
A New Milestone for HS2 Construction
The Copthall Tunnel is the first of five green tunnels planned along the route between London and the West Midlands to be fully completed, both structurally and in terms of backfilling. In the next phase, the surface will be landscaped with trees, shrubs, and vegetation so that the structure blends as seamlessly as possible into the natural landscape.
The other four green tunnels are also at an advanced stage of construction. HS2 recently announced the completion of the structural work on the Chipping Warden Tunnel in Northamptonshire, ahead of the backfilling work.
The Copthall Tunnel is located between the Northolt Tunnel and the Colne Valley Viaduct, the longest railway bridge in the United Kingdom, which was completed last year. The structure is over 800 meters long, approximately 12 meters high, and up to 16 meters wide inside, and is equipped with five natural ventilation shafts.
Over the next two years, work will focus on landscaping the area above the tunnel and planting vegetation, so that the structure becomes an integral part of the landscape and helps reduce the visual impact of the new high-speed rail line.
The completion of the Copthall Tunnel confirms the progress of one of Europe’s most important rail infrastructure projects. The 225-km HS2 corridor will create new transport capacity between London and the West Midlands, providing faster and more reliable connections and freeing up capacity on the congested West Coast Main Line for regional and freight trains.
At the same time, HS2 Ltd is implementing a comprehensive program to reorganize the project, aimed at optimizing costs and improving the efficiency of the work. According to the Department for Transport, simplifying certain design and operational elements could generate savings of up to 2.5 billion GBP and reduce the construction period by approximately one year.
