Amid repeated attacks on Ukraine’s energy grid, trains have been given a new mission. The so-called “trains of invincibility,” launched by Ukrzaliznytsia, function as autonomous mobile hubs, providing heat, electricity, and internet in cities affected by power outages. Sometimes, they become shelters.
This is how the “trains of invincibility” came about — carriages converted into heated, autonomous spaces where people can find warmth, electricity, and internet connection during massive power outages.
The project is coordinated by Ukrzaliznytsia and has gradually become one of the most visible symbols of civil resilience in Ukraine.
What are the “invincibility carriages”?
The first seven carriages were placed in the Kyiv region, in cities affected by major power outages: three in Brovary, two in Boryspil, and two in Vasylkiv (Vasylkiv-Center station).
Each carriage can accommodate approximately 40 people at a time and offers: The initiative was subsequently expanded nationwide, with the goal of launching 100 such carriages.
- complete heating systems for severe winter conditions;
- charging stations powered by generators and portable sources;
- internet connection via Starlink;
- free hot tea;
- children’s compartments with games, books, and cartoons;
- pet-friendly spaces so that families do not have to leave their pets behind. The initiative was subsequently expanded nationwide, with the goal of launching 100 such carriages.
Mobile, fully autonomous hubsUnlike fixed heating centers, these carriages can be quickly moved to areas where the situation is most severe.
They use rolling stock from the railway company’s non-operational fleet and are converted into fully autonomous hubs, capable of operating independently of the local power grid.
This mobility is essential in an unpredictable context, where attacks can affect several cities simultaneously. Local authorities can request their relocation to where power outages are most severe.
The initiative is being implemented in collaboration with organizations such as All Hands and Hearts, World Central Kitchen, White Stork, and the Hachiko Foundation, alongside regional authorities.Targets of attacksSymbolically, the “invincibility wagons” were not spared from the bombings either.
In February, one such wagon located in the Sumy region, in the Shostka district, was hit in an attack. The explosion affected the railway infrastructure and nearby buildings, and people were sheltering inside at the time of the impact.
Once the security situation allowed, railway workers resumed train traffic.
It is a detail that says a lot about the role of the railway in Ukraine today: the infrastructure is hit, but it quickly returns to operation. More than just warmth Since the start of the large-scale invasion in 2022, Ukrzaliznytsia has become a pillar of Ukrainian resistance — evacuating civilians, maintaining internal and external connections, and ensuring the continuity of freight transport.
The “trains of invincibility” take this mission to a deeply human level. They are not just warming stations, but spaces where families can charge a phone, heat food, and regain, for a few hours, a sense of normalcy.
In the compartments dedicated to children, games and cartoons become a form of temporary refuge in a climate dominated by uncertainty.
In a war where energy is a strategic target, these carriages transformed into mobile support centers tell a simple story: trains continue to run. And when they cannot leave the station, they remain in place—to provide shelter.
