Hong Kong has been officially designated as the host of the 2028 edition of the UITP Summit, marking the first time the event will be held in the Asia-Pacific region. The decision was made following a competitive selection process and deliberations by the UITP Executive Board.
The local host organisation will be MTR Corporation, Hong Kong’s rail operator.
The most important global forum for public transport
The UITP Summit is the world’s leading event dedicated to public transport, bringing together thousands of professionals — operators, public authorities, industry suppliers and decision-makers — from over 100 countries every year.
Around 10,000 participants are expected to attend the 2028 edition, which will be held in one of the world’s most advanced cities in terms of urban mobility.
Hong Kong’s confirmation for 2028 is part of the summit’s global rotation: after the 2026 edition in Dubai and a return to Hamburg in 2027, Asia-Pacific will host this landmark event for the first time.
Recognition of an urban mobility model
The selection of Hong Kong reflects both the performance of its public transport system and the increasingly important role of the Asia-Pacific region in shaping the future of sustainable urban mobility.
Public transport covers approximately 90% of the daily journeys of Hong Kong residents, and the rail network is the backbone of the system. The integrated development model—transport, infrastructure, and urban planning—is considered one of the most efficient globally.
“Bringing the UITP Summit to Hong Kong in 2028 reflects the global strength of the Asia-Pacific region and the central role that public transport plays in shaping sustainable cities. We look forward to working closely with MTR Corporation and local partners to organize a summit that highlights the region’s leadership in urban mobility,” said UITP Secretary General Mohamed Mezghani.
Partnership with MTR and regional dimension
MTR has been a member of UITP since 1990 and has actively participated in the organization’s committees and working groups, hosting Asia-Pacific regional conferences in the past.
As the host organization, MTR will collaborate with UITP, local authorities, and industry partners to organize the 2028 summit.
“We are deeply honored to bring the UITP Summit to Hong Kong for the first time in the Asia-Pacific region. The event will serve as a valuable platform for public transport stakeholders from around the world to explore strategies and strengthen collaboration in the face of challenges and opportunities brought about by technological advances, asset quality, changing passenger expectations, and evolving public policy frameworks,” said Jeny Yeung, Chief Executive Officer of MTR Corporation.
For the first time, the global debate on the future of public transport will take place in Asia-Pacific — a region undergoing rapid urban and technological transformation.
