Metro Vancouver’s first new train has entered passenger service on the Expo and Millennium Lines using Hitachi Rail’s SelTrac, a state-of-the-art signalling technology. The train, one of 47 new Mark V vehicles, is now equipped with two Vehicle On-Board Controllers (VOBCs), enabling seamless integration into the existing SkyTrain network.

Advanced CBTC system
Developed in Canada, Hitachi Rail’s SelTrac Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) system underpins the SkyTrain network’s automated operations. The system provides real-time information on train location and movement, supporting safe and efficient driverless service. It enables increased frequency and improved service reliability for one of Canada’s busiest transit systems.
A 40-year partnership with deep Canadian roots
This milestone extends a four-decade partnership between Hitachi Rail and Metro Vancouver’s transit agency, TransLink. The collaboration began with the Expo Line’s launch in 1986—one of the world’s first fully driverless rail systems. Since then, SelTrac technology has evolved alongside SkyTrain’s expansion and is now a key component in metro systems worldwide, including London, Paris, Dubai, and New York.
Supporting a 28% SkyTrain network expansion
The SkyTrain fleet expansion is part of Metro Vancouver’s 10-Year Transportation Vision and supports a 28% increase in network length. Major projects such as the Broadway Subway and Surrey Langley SkyTrain extensions will also be equipped with SelTrac CBTC technology.
“Hitachi Rail’s 40+ year partnership with Metro Vancouver’s transit system is testament to our onboard technology developed right here in Canada,” said Ziad Rizk, Managing Director of Urban Rail Signalling at Hitachi Rail. “This milestone signifies the next significant stride in our shared journey that commenced in 1986 with the groundbreaking introduction of SkyTrain, the world’s first driverless train system. Our innovative technology seamlessly integrates new vehicles into service, reflecting the collaborative efforts of TransLink, Hitachi Rail, and our valued partners. Together, we enhance the passenger experience across one of Canada’s busiest transit networks.”
