Hitachi Rail expands partnership with Prasarana in Malaysia

Hitachi Rail and Prasarana, Malaysia’s public urban transport operator, have signed an Industrial Collaboration Program (ICP) agreement, an industrial collaboration program designed to support technology transfer, local skills development, and the involvement of Malaysian industry in strategic rail projects.

The initiative is part of the project to modernize the automatic signaling system on the Kelana Jaya line and is in line with the Malaysian government’s policy on industrial collaborations.

Know-how transfer and local skills development

The ICP program includes several concrete initiatives, two of which have already been completed. These focused on knowledge transfer in the field of data analysis, carried out at Hitachi Rail’s digital competence center, as well as a program of internships and professional attachments with the company’s experts in the field of railway signaling.

Further actions include:

  • the development of a testing and simulation center for signaling systems;
  • specialization programs with experts in CBTC (Communications-Based Train Control) systems;
  • localization initiatives, carried out in partnership with local companies.

A partnership of over 30 years

Hitachi Rail has been involved in the development of Malaysia’s urban rail network since 1998. Over time, the company has introduced the SelTrac CBTC system on the Kelana Jaya line and modernized the signaling systems for the Ampang and Kelana Jaya monorail networks.

Recent projects include the commissioning of an integrated control center that manages three major lines, as well as the modernization of the Ampang line with advanced safety systems. At the same time, Hitachi Rail has contributed to the development of local skills through the Rail Center of Excellence in Batu Gajah.

Alignment with Malaysia’s national strategy

The new industrial collaboration program is designed in line with Malaysia’s national ICP policy, which aims to ensure that strategic infrastructure projects generate long-term benefits for the local economy beyond the actual technical delivery.

“This industrial collaboration program underscores Hitachi’s long-term commitment to localization in Malaysia and strengthens our strategic relationship with Prasarana Malaysia Berhad,” said Cyrille Bataille, Head of APAC Market at Hitachi Rail.

Through this partnership, Hitachi Rail and Prasarana aim not only to modernize urban transport infrastructure, but also to create a sustainable base of local skills and expertise for future rail projects in Malaysia.
