Hitachi Rail delivers new dispatch system for Berlin S-Bahn

Hitachi Rail has implemented a new digital dispatching system for Berlin’s S-Bahn network in collaboration with infrastructure operator DB InfraGO. The system, named DiStEL, is based on the ARAMIS platform and replaces the network’s previous dispatching infrastructure, enhancing the control centre’s ability to manage services and respond to operational challenges.

DiStEL is designed to improve stability, speed of response, and system interoperability, creating a future-proofed digital foundation for Berlin’s urban rail operations. The solution forms part of the wider digital transformation of Germany’s rail network and contributes directly to improving passenger experience through more reliable and transparent service information.

Enhanced resilience and connectivity

A key benefit of the DiStEL system is its ability to enable faster reaction times in the event of service disruptions, allowing operators to make swift decisions that reduce delays and better inform passengers. Additionally, the new system facilitates the integration of multiple passenger information services, while also supporting upcoming functionalities such as routing services and the Digital European Driver Order (DEDO).

“With DiStEL, we are taking another important step toward a modern, connected, and customer-focused rail operation,” said Matthias Engelmann, Head of the Operations Control Center at DB InfraGO. “The system’s high flexibility helps us keep operations stable, even in complex scenarios.”

Collaborative implementation

The success of the Berlin rollout was attributed to strong collaboration between Hitachi Rail and DB InfraGO. The implementation involved extensive coordination to ensure the platform met the technical and operational needs of one of Germany’s busiest urban rail systems.

“The most important success factor was the close coordination and collaboration between all project partners. This kind of cooperation is essential for tackling the challenges of the coming years,” added Florian Fellbaum, Head of Sales & Business Development Berlin at Hitachi Rail in Germany.

A Scalable model for other cities

The deployment in Berlin highlights the potential of digital dispatching systems to strengthen rail operations in complex metropolitan environments. The ARAMIS-based DiStEL system offers a scalable, resilient platform suitable for adaptation in other urban rail networks across Germany and Europe.

The new system not only aligns with Germany’s national digitisation strategy for rail but also supports broader European rail interoperability objectives. It is expected to serve as a technical model for future dispatching upgrades, contributing to more efficient and reliable public transport in the years ahead.
