Hamburg secures EIB funding for new metro trains

Hamburger Hochbahn and the European Investment Bank (EIB) have signed a EUR 173 million loan agreement to finance the procurement of 41 new DT6 metro trains.

The contract was signed by EIB Vice-President Nicola Beer and Hochbahn CEO Robert Henrich, in the presence of Hamburg’s Senator for Transport and Mobility Transition and Chairman of Hochbahn’s Supervisory Board, Anjes Tjarks.

“The DT6 contract is the largest single investment in Hochbahn’s history. We are thrilled at how quickly we were able to negotiate and sign a loan agreement with the EIB for the first order. Naturally, we are also very pleased to know that the project aligns with the EIB’s policy objectives, and that we can therefore benefit from an excellent interest rate,” said Hochbahn CEO Robert Henrich.

The DT6, designed as a twin unit, is the latest generation of metro train for Hamburg. Both the DT6-F model (operated with train crew) and the DT6-A model (fully self-driving and unstaffed) will enter service from 2028.

“With the new DT6 trains, we are creating a modern, attractive mobility offer for the existing network, and soon a fully self-driving one, operating every 90 seconds on the new U5 line,” said Anjes Tjarks.

In July 2024, Hamburger Hochbahn and Alstom signed a EUR 2.8 billion framework agreement for the supply of up to 374 new metro trains, for both fully and semi-automated operation. The firm order includes the delivery of 48 trains worth EUR 670 million. Under the agreement, Alstom is also responsible for installing its CBTC Urbalis system on the U5 line.

As part of the firm order, Alstom will deliver 41 DT6 trains and seven DT6-A trains. The DT6 trains will be manufactured from 2026 at Alstom’s site in Salzgitter, Germany, with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2028. Following testing, the trains are expected to enter service on the U5 line in 2029.
