Hamburg opens U4 extension

The public transport company Hamburger Hochbahn officially launched the 1.3 km extension of Line U4 from HafenCity station to Elbbrücken.
The new section extends U4 from the former terminus HafenCity University to the eastern HafenCity, where there are construction sites for a new neighborhood. After it will be completed, 18,000 passengers will use the new section daily.
Thanks to the opening of Elbbrücken station situated on S3 and S31 S-Bahn line, within the next year the two stations will be connected by a 65-meter-long ‘Skywalk’ at a high of 9 meter offering an alternative route to the center of the city, forming an important junction in Hamburg. “”In the future, the new Elbbrücken station will offer S-Bahn passengers from the south an attractive option for connecting to the U-Bahn in the HafenCity, the city center and the east of Hamburg,” said the First Mayor of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, Peter Tschentscher.
The spectacular roof with a height of a 16-meters high is made of intersecting arched steel frames and glazed windows that are 136 meters long and 32 meters wide. 1,200 glass sheets weighing 250 kg each produce a total weight of around 300 tonnes.
In 2012, the 4-km U4 line was punt into operation between Jungfernstieg and HafenCity University, sharing the tracks with U2 between Jungfernstieg and Billstedt.
