“This concession means more and better public transport in the city. From 29 March 2026, there will be an immediate 4% increase in public transport on the streets. With this decision, GVB remains our long-standing partner in providing the city’s public transport – a role they’ve held for the past 125 years,” Melanie van der Horst, Chair of the Amsterdam Transport Region, said.

The new concession officially starts on 1 July, but passengers will experience the changes from March 2026, when the new timetable comes into effect.

With the introduction of the new timetable in 2026, public transport in and around Amsterdam will expand. There is also an ambition to further improve public transport in the years ahead. From 2027, this will involve increasing the frequency of metro services, ensuring passengers continue to travel comfortably as the number of users grows.

In the longer term, the goal is to operate busy routes so frequently that they qualify as high-quality public transport (HOV) lines.

Sustainability ambitions include reducing energy consumption, increasing circularity, and being better prepared for extreme weather events caused by climate change.

The contract to deliver public transport services in Amsterdam and its region “allows us to contribute to Amsterdam’s growth by offering an ever-expanding public transport network. In doing so, we help keep the city liveable and accessible for everyone who lives, works, or visits here,” Claudia Zuiderwijk, CEO of GVB, said.

Amsterdam metro network consists of five lines totalling 42.7 km with 39 stations while the tram system with a length of 200 km and 500 stops, covers the entire city, with the exception of Amsterdam-Noord and Zuidoost.

GVB also delivers bus services all over Amsterdam including its metropolitan area and ferry services on both the North Sea Canal and IJ, a free-of-charge public transport service connecting Amsterdam Centraal with various points across the IJ waterway, primarily serving Amsterdam-Noord.
