GSM-R contract for Murcia–Almería HSR awarded

Spain’s Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has awarded a EUR 30.5 million contract for the deployment of the GSM-R technology on Murcia–Almería high-speed line,  including the Pulpí–Águilas branch. The contract marks a further step forward in the development of this new 200 km railway line.

Murcia–Almería high-speed line

The project, to be carried out by Adif Alta Velocidad (Adif AV), covers the installation og latest railway communications technology GSM-R, a radio transmission system operating on frequencies reserved exclusively for railways, ensuring interoperability across European railway networks.

This system enables mobile communications for line operations and supports the functioning of the signalling and safety system to be installed, the ERTMS Level 2, which is also under contract and is the most advanced of its kind.

GSM-R allows the transmission of data between ERTMS equipment installed along the tracks and on board trains.

With this contract award, the Ministry continues to advance works in various areas and stages of the future Murcia–Almería high-speed line. This follows the recent tender for track installation on the first section of the line, from Murcia to Lorca, while progress continues on the design phase for the second section.

At the same time, the initial electrification works are under way, and efforts are ongoing to complete the line’s infrastructure. Seven of the 17 sub-sections planned for construction have been completed, and work is progressing on the remaining ones, all of which are already in motion, except for the Pulpí–Águilas connection, for which the project design is being finalised.

Through Adif, the Ministry of Transport continues to drive forward the development of the Murcia–Almería high-speed line, a strategic component of the Mediterranean Corridor. The new line, in addition to serving as a link and gateway from the corridor to the south, will integrate Almería into the high-speed network via the Levante Corridor and into the European rail networks, helping to promote territorial cohesion and connectivity.
