ÖBB, in cooperation with the City of Vienna and the 20th district (Brigittenau), signed an agreement to redesign Maria-Restituta-Platz around Wien Handelskai station part of the Vienna S-Bahn trunk line upgrade programme.

The area is located on the main S-Bahn line and the cooperation will result in an attractive public space for people of all ages. Under the motto “Out of the Asphalt”, new green islands, a water feature and drinking fountain, as well as a widened cycle path, will enhance the entire neighbourhood and contribute to improving the quality of life in Brigittenau.
By the end of 2027, ÖBB will future-proof the Vienna S-Bahn main line and its connecting routes in Lower Austria. The enhanced public transport offering will benefit not only people in the city and commuters from Lower Austria, but also the environment. To allow modern and longer trains with more seats to operate on the trunk line in future, the platforms at Wien Handelskai station have been extended to 220 metres. New additional access buildings towards Engerthstraße now provide an easy interchange between bus and rail.
Modernisation works at Wien Handelskai station are in their final phase – with the timetable change in mid-December 2025, the new platforms and access buildings will enter service. In parallel, the redesign of the approximately 11,500 m² Maria-Restituta-Platz is now beginning. The majority of the construction costs are being covered by ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG. The City of Vienna is contributing to the overall cost and providing the district with funding for the redesigning of the square.
With Vienna S-Bahn trunk line upgrade project, “and the modernisation of Wien Handelskai station, we are making targeted investments in the future of urban mobility. Combining high-performance rail infrastructure with an attractive, green public space demonstrates how modern mobility and quality of life can go hand in hand,” Judith Engel, Executive Board Member of ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG, said.
The areas will have greening squares, more than 6,000 m² of unsealed surface, 13 new trees, “a water feature and seating areas will ensure a pleasant place to linger in the future, and the surrounding cycling infrastructure will also be significantly improved!” said Ulli Sima, City Councillor for Planning and Mobility.
Alongside more than 230 m² of new or enlarged green spaces, light-coloured paving will improve rainwater infiltration, while two drinking fountains and pergolas with misting systems will provide cooling on hot days.
The redevelopment of Maria-Restituta-Platz and the station will be completed by May 2026.
