Green light for Lithuanian Railways’ reorganisation

The Lithuanian Government has approved splitting railway company Lietuvos Gelezinkeliai into three separate companies for passenger transportation, for freight transport and for infrastructure management.
“An action plan will be worked out to achieve this task tentatively within a year,” Mantas Bartuska, CEO of Lietuvos Gelezinkeliai, said. The restructuring of the company may require amending several pieces of legislation by the government and the parliament, he added.
This process’ aim is to ensure the efficiency, transparency and independence of the public railway infrastructure manager, as well as to ensure the implementation of EU legislation.
“This process will maintain company’s financial and functional stability and will strength its strategic position on the market. Thus, the company will be more efficient and transparent,” Transport Minister, Rokas Masiulis said.
The newly established companies will be controlled 100 percent by the parent company Lietuvos geležinkeliai (Lithuanian Railways), which is owned by the state.
