The tram network in Gold Coast, Australia, has been extended by 6.7 km and eight stops, following the commissioning of the third phase of the project. Keolis, the operator that has managed the system for over 12 years, has commenced the operation and maintenance of the new section.
The tram network in Gold Coast, one of the main cities in the Australian state of Queensland, has reached a total length of 27 km following the opening of the third phase of the expansion project.
The new section extends the route from Broadbeach South to Burleigh Heads and adds 6.7 km of track and eight stops.
At the same time, the fleet operating the network has been expanded with five new trams.
Keolis continues to operate the network
The operation and maintenance of the new section are handled by Keolis, the French group specialising in public transport, which has been managing the Gold Coast tram network for over 12 years.
The company also participated in the preparations for the commissioning of phase three, alongside GoldlinQ and the Australian authorities.
The extension is designed to improve access to workplaces, educational institutions, healthcare services, and commercial and leisure areas.
The network now stretches to 27 km
With the opening of the Broadbeach South–Burleigh Heads section, the Gold Coast tram network now stretches to 27 km.
The project was carried out in collaboration with GoldlinQ, the Queensland State Government, Gold Coast local authorities and the Australian Government.
Keolis states that the opening of phase three is the result of several years of planning and collaboration between the authorities and the companies involved in the development of the public transport system.
