Gold Coast opens Stage 2 of its light rail system

Stage 2 of Queensland’s Gold Coast LRT network has been put into commercial service with free trips tmarking the first day of its opening.
The 7.3-km light rail line offers a 11 minute trip from Helensvale station to Gold Coast University Hospital with 19 station stops and, in addition, the line links Gold Coast and Brisbane by rail.
Under the project, there are two park ‘n’ ride facilities, providing an additional 400 parks at Helensvale station and 1,000 parks at Parkwood station.
As Queensland’s first light rail system, G:link represents a major step forward in transforming the city into a modern, accessible destination, as it will be highly used during 2018 Commonwealth Games. The completion of Stage 2 is another milestone shaping the Gold Coast as a truly world class city.
During the 2018 Commonwealth Games, more than six million additional trips are forecast across the Gold Coast transport network. Light rail will provide direct access to arts and cultural activities at Broadbeach and Surfers Paradise, while also moving spectator passengers between key transportation hubs.
