More than GBP 1.7 million will be invested in station improvements across Govia Thameslink Railway’s (GTR) network, the UK’s largest, following a successful year of enhancements across London and the South East.
The upgrades, funded through the Department for Transport’s Minor Works Fund and Station Improvement Fund, will target passenger comfort, safety, and accessibility at over 50 stations on the Southern, Thameslink, Great Northern, and Gatwick Express routes.
Key improvements across the GTR Network planned for 2024/25 include:
📍 Network-wide:
- Ten new 3D wayfinding maps at stations including Bedford, Stevenage, Redhill, and Eastbourne
- Touchscreen info boards for live travel updates
- Enhanced CCTV at 20 stations based on crime data
📍 North of London:
- New pedestrian access to a retail park near Luton Airport Parkway
- Improved accessibility at Hitchin and Downham Market
- Better rail replacement facilities at Royston
📍 London:
- Changing Places toilet design at Peckham Rye
- Ticket office relocation at Elephant and Castle to support area redevelopment
📍 South of London:
- Remodelled toilets at Brighton
- Heritage-style shelters at Lewes
- Second gateline planned for Worthing
- Key-fob bike parking at Chichester
Last year’s completed projects include five interactive information screens—installed at stations like Gatwick Airport and East Croydon—featuring British Sign Language departure boards to support passengers with hearing loss.
“These funds help us deliver our goal of creating great journeys every day. While major projects like digital signalling are under way, smaller schemes also go a long way in enhancing daily passenger experience,” GTR’s Chief Customer Officer, Louis Rambaud, said.
The investment builds on GTR’s commitment to maintain welcoming, accessible, and safe station environments, with feedback from passengers and staff helping shape priorities for the network’s continued improvements.
