Twenty-five years after operating its first train, GB Railfreight (GBRf) has become the UK’s largest rail freight operator, according to the latest data published by the Office of Rail and Road (ORR).
The company currently accounts for 31.4% of the total kilometers traveled by freight trains in the UK and 33.3% of the total kilometers traveled by freight vehicles, solidifying its leading position in the British market.
Since its launch in 2001, GB Railfreight has steadily expanded its operations, helping to create thousands of stable, specialized jobs in the rail industry, many of which are located outside London and the Southeast region. Today, the company serves an extensive network of destinations, including Fowey, Fort William, Penmaenmawr, and the Isle of Grain, transporting goods essential to the economy.
“If someone had told us 25 years ago, as we were preparing to operate our first train, that we would one day become the largest rail freight operator in the UK, I think few of us would have believed it,” said John Smith OBE, CEO of GB Railfreight.
The company’s success has been driven by consistent investment in personnel, locomotives, rolling stock, and operational facilities. In recent years, the operator has introduced modern locomotives into service, including the new Class 99 locomotives manufactured by Stadler, expanded its fleet of railcars, and modernized operational facilities across its network. At the same time, the company has invested in employee training, safety standards, and improving working conditions.
Rail freight is strengthening its role in the British economy
Currently, GB Railfreight transports a wide range of goods, from containers and construction materials to biomass, consumer products, and materials needed for infrastructure projects. The company’s operations help supply industry and support major investments in British infrastructure.
According to industry data, rail freight generates approximately GBP 2.5 billion (EUR 2.9 billion) annually for the UK economy and significantly reduces road congestion by eliminating thousands of trips made by heavy trucks. At the same time, shifting freight from road to rail helps reduce carbon emissions and supports the country’s decarbonization goals.
GB Railfreight has no plans to slow down its investment pace. As demand for sustainable transportation solutions continues to grow, GB Railfreight believes that rail freight will play an increasingly important role in economic development, strengthening supply chains, and reducing environmental impact.
