FS Logistix has won the contract to take over rail shunting services in the Port of Antwerp through HSL Belgium. The Belgian company, controlled by TX Logistik, has won the contract to operate the first and last mile of rail in zone 6A (Marshalldok) of the Port of Antwerp.

Through this contract, HSL Belgium will play a key role in rail logistics and rail shunting operations in one of Europe’s most important ports, with a clear focus on sustainability, including the use of new-generation hybrid locomotives.

The award of the contract complements FS Logistix’s recent acquisition of a 30% stake in the operation of the Mainhub terminal in Antwerp, carried out in partnership with Lineas, as well as the management of commercial rail traffic between Belgium and Italy. These strategic initiatives aim to increase the efficiency and connectivity of rail freight services on the main European corridors.

“We are continuing our internationalisation strategy to become the European market leader in integrated logistics. Winning this tender through our company TX Logistik confirms the implementation of measures aimed at strengthening our presence in Europe,” said Sabrina De Filippis, CEO of FS Logistix.

Rail shunting services in the Port of Antwerp will be carried out with hybrid vehicles, supporting HSL Belgium’s transition to a fossil-free rail market. The first DE18 hybrid locomotive, named “The Lion,” is already operational on routes between Antwerp North and Antwerp Petrol.

The commitment to sustainability will continue with the introduction of a second new DE18 hybrid locomotive, which will replace older diesel models, helping to reduce emissions and increase operational efficiency in the port.

Operator HSL Belgium purchased the first DE18 diesel-electric hybrid locomotive from manufacturer Vossloh Rolling Stock, and it is used by TX Logistik. These shunting locomotives are leased through Nexrail for shunting operations in the port of Antwerp and offer a high level of flexibility thanks to their advanced features, supporting the expansion of HSL’s European network.

European rail freight operator HSL Belgium was established in 2016 as part of the wider HSL network and is part of the TX Logistik group, which, since January 2017, has been owned by FS Logistix, part of the Italian group FS Italiane.
