FS Logistix and Logtainer are launching freight trains from the ports of Genoa and Vado

FS Logistix and Logtainer have launched new rail freight connections between the Italian ports of Genoa and Vado Ligure and the inland terminals of Verona Quadrante Europa and Milan Segrate, based on a partnership aimed at strengthening sea-rail intermodality for freight flows to and from the ports of Liguria.

The agreement was signed by the CEOs of the two companies, Sabrina De Filippis and Paolo Montanari, and provides for the transfer of goods arriving by sea directly onto trains operated by Mercitalia Rail, to be transported onward to Verona or Milan, and from there to final destinations in Italy and the rest of Europe.

Ligurian ports, better connected to the European intermodal network

According to the companies, the collaboration between the logistics company of the FS Group and the intermodal operator controlled by the GIP 2.0 group now goes beyond the mere traction component and enters the realm of the effective management of logistics flows.

By connecting to the hubs in Segrate and Verona, the new services enable the use of the intermodal network to central and northern Europe, directly linking the Ligurian ports to some of the most important terminals and European ports.

The two companies describe this project as a shared vision in which rail transport would become the “backbone” of maritime flows, through stronger integration between ports, inland terminals, and markets, with benefits for the efficiency, competitiveness, and sustainability of logistics chains.

A continuation of a commercial agreement signed in 2025

The new services complement the commercial agreement signed in May 2025 by FS Logistix and Logtainer for the development of intermodal maritime logistics.

Under that agreement, the two companies set out to combine complementary expertise to offer the market rail-road transport solutions across an ever-expanding network, with high frequency and improved service levels.

In this model, FS Logistix handles the rail component, while Logtainer serves as the single commercial interface in its relationship with the market.

Focus on efficiency and sustainability

By launching these connections, the two companies aim to strengthen the role of rail in transporting goods from the ports of Liguria, at a time when major European logistics groups are seeking to shift a larger portion of traffic from road to more efficient and less polluting solutions.
