Flexity tram arrives in Duisburg

Flexity tram for Duisburg Bombardier Transportation has delivered DVG the first pre-series of Flexity tram for Duisburg city, that was presented to the public.

The new tram will enter comprehensive test and approval processes with trials set to soon start on the local network.

The tram is marked with the slogan, “I am the new one. Your new comfort zone” and has a lot to offer in terms of comfort and safety, as it is brighter and more spacious than the previous model.

The new tram has a capacity for up to 200 passengers, ensuring a smooth and rapid flow and a better accessibility due to the two doors in the end cars and one in the middle car. In addition, the tram is equipped with air conditioning and a high-tech passenger information system will keep passengers informed about upcoming stops and connections. According to the order, to further ensure passenger safety, two cameras replace rear-mirrors and an additional picture-in-picture camera will eliminate blind spots.

These modern trams are equipped with image-based driver assistance system known as the Obstacle Detection and Assistance System (ODAS), which helps to prevent collisions. It anticipates possible collisions with pedestrians, cyclists or vehicles, sends an alarm to the driver and can initiate braking. Two concealed impact elements as well as flexible, soft trim parts in the lower area ensure even more protection for road users.

The Flexity tram for Duisburg is a bidirectional 3-car-vehicle that is 70 per cent low-floor. It has a length of 34 metres and they are 2.3 meters wide.

“We’re very proud to contribute to Duisburg’s efforts in attracting an even bigger share of the city’s population to use public transport, reduce local road traffic and air pollution,” said Dirk Wunderlich, the Head of Business Unit German Cities at Bombardier Transportation.

In December 2017, Duisburger Verkehrsgesellschaft awarded Bombardier a EUR 132 million contract for the delivery of 47 new Flexity trams. They will be delivered until 2023.
