The new ICE L high-speed train, designed to set new standards in accessibility and passenger comfort, has been approved for operation in Germany. Manufacturer Talgo confirmed to Deutsche Bahn (DB) that certification had been granted, enabling the train to enter passenger service as planned at the end of this year.

DB will officially unveil the first ICE L on 17 October in Berlin, with four units scheduled to enter service before the end of 2025. Initially, from the mid-December timetable change, the trains will operate domestically between Berlin and Cologne. The rollout has been delayed by supply chain issues at Talgo and by extended testing and approval processes.
Key features of the ICE L
-
Step-free boarding: For the first time, DB passengers will be able to board a high-speed train without steps or lifts. This is designed to ease access for travellers with large luggage, wheelchairs, bicycles or pushchairs.
-
New interior design: Shorter car lengths, homely materials and lighting that adjusts to the time of day aim to create a spacious and comfortable environment.
-
Improved mobile reception: Window panes have been developed to allow mobile signals to pass through directly, removing the need for onboard repeaters and enhancing connectivity.
-
Enhanced seating: Input from 1,600 test participants has shaped the design, with improvements in ergonomics and comfort. Every seat is equipped with a large folding table, plus holders for tablets and smartphones.
