A new rail grinder supplied by Loram to Network Rail has successfully completed ETCS Level 2 testing, becoming the first machine of its kind in the UK ready for digital cab signaling.
The vehicle, named RGC01, is equipped with an ETCS system supplied by Hitachi Rail and has been tested on Network Rail’s test lines at Tuxford and Melton Mowbray.
Preparing for digital signaling on the East Coast Main Line
The project is part of the East Coast Digital Programme, which aims to introduce the European ETCS signaling system on the East Coast Main Line.
As part of this project, traditional trackside signaling will be gradually replaced by digital cab signaling, with trains controlled by the European Rail Traffic Management System.
“We welcome the introduction of a new rail grinding machine ready for digital cab signaling,” said Chris Hobden, program director of the East Coast Digital Programme at Network Rail.
According to him, the introduction of ETCS will enable more efficient network operation, with better performance and a higher level of safety.
Specialized vehicle for infrastructure maintenance
The RGC01 machine was built in the United States and delivered to the UK in May 2025.
The vehicle is equipped with 40 grinding stones, which can be digitally programmed to re-profile the rail head according to the condition of the infrastructure, traffic speed, or the requirements of line engineers.
The ETCS system integration project took approximately two years and involved collaboration between Loram, Hitachi Rail, and several companies involved in the design and testing of the system.
